Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Friday his government will make efforts to provide a sufficient amount of funding for the development of Okinawa Prefecture for fiscal 2016, which starts in April next year, according to the Jiji Press.
"The government will do its best to fulfill the promise made to Okinawa people," Abe said at a meeting with Takeshi Onaga, governor of the southernmost Japan prefecture, at the prime minister`s office in Tokyo.
Abe made the comments after Onaga demanded that the central government set aside more than 300 billion yen for Okinawa development under a fiscal 2016 state budget.
In December 2013, Abe unveiled plans to earmark more than 300 billion yen for Okinawa development every year through fiscal 2021.
Abe and Onaga last met on April 17.
