African Union hails Azerbaijan's achievements in ensuring women's rights

"The African Union praises Azerbaijan's achievements in ensuring women's rights," said Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on Women, Peace and Security Bineta Diop as she met with Azerbaijani Ambassador to Ethiopia Elman Abdullayev.
Ms. Diop underlined the importance for African countries to learn Azerbaijan`s rich experience, and expressed the African Union's readiness to cooperate with Azerbaijan in this area.
The Azerbaijani Ambassador hailed women's role in the history of the country, saying Azerbaijan was one of the first countries in the world which granted the women the right to vote.
Hailing the Azerbaijani government's attention to women, Mr. Abdullayev said first Lady of Azerbaijan, president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva contributed to increasing Azerbaijani women's prestige on the international arena. He said a variety of international events on the role of women in intercultural dialogue and other issues were been held on the initiative of first lady Mehriban Aliyeva.
Saying the African Union declared 2016 as the Year of Women Rights, the Ambassador noted that a variety of events were held through Azerbaijan-UNESCO partnership to promote better education for women in African countries including in Liberia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
