Azerbaijan, Iran mull expansion of cooperation

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov held a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is on an official visit to Azerbaijan.
During the meeting Mammadyarov said the two countries are bound by historical roots, informing the Iranian FM about the current state of negotiations and settlement process of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
Mammadyarov also stressed importance of the trilateral meetings, noting that the Iran-Azerbaijan-Turkey trilateral meeting would take place in Iran.
The sides also discussed how to further develop bilateral relations. The construction of Resht-Astara railway, the next meeting of Caspian littoral states’ foreign ministers due next month also were in the focus of foreign ministers.
Mohammad Zarif said about 20 Iranian ministers made visits to Azerbaijan over the last two years, noting the importance of developing relations in various spheres.
The two ministers underlined the significance of reciprocal visits to boost economic, political, international relations, fighting terrorism, as well as discuss agricultural, transport, cultural and energy questions.
