Azerbaijani FM meets Deputy Assistant of US Secretary of State in Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor

Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov has met Deputy Assistant of US Secretary of State in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Thomas O. Melia on the sidelines of the OSCE 21st Ministerial Council in Basel.
They exchanged views on the development of civil society and regional issues.
Highlighting the dynamic development of the civil society in Azerbaijan, Minister Elmar Mammadyarov added that the Government provides comprehensive support to civil society development and takes steadfast democratic reforms.
Touching upon the human rights issues Minister Elmar Mammadyarov expressed the necessity of paying due attention to restoration of violated rights of more than one million Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaces persons who have deprived of basic rights and have undergone ethnic cleaning at the result of aggression of Armenia against Azerbaijan. Minister Mammadyarov added that all basic rights of Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaces persons, including right to life, which enshrined in the international legal instruments, have been blatantly violated.
Noting that the international community has to demonstrate an active position concerning this issue, Minister Elmar Mammadyarov stressed that engagement of the United States to keep this issue high on the agenda in different formats could contribute to the settlement process of the conflict.
