Construction of Azerbaijan and Iran parts of North-South international transport corridor to start

Azerbaijani and Iranian delegations reached an agreement on starting the construction works of Azerbaijan and Iran parts of the North-South international transport corridor, during a meeting held in Astara, the Ministry of Economy and Industry said

Length of Azerbaijani part of the railway makes 8.3 km, the Iranian part 2 km. At present, the transportations between Azerbaijan and Iran are carried out by motor transport and total capacity is 600,000 tons.

After connection of Azerbaijani and Iranian railway lines, the capacity is planned to increase to 5 mln tons, then, to 10 mln tons.

Besides having great political and economic importance, the construction of Azerbaijan and Iran parts of the North-South international transport corridor will significantly expand the capacity of transit of both countries.
