Earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude strikes in Nepal

A massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake has struck Nepal less than 50 miles from the capital, Kathmandu, the U.S. Geological Survey said Saturday. The second tremor which came five minutes later was recorded at 6.6 on the Richter scale.
While initial reports only suggest massive damage to the infrastructure in Nepal, now it is becoming clear that the death toll could be significant. Television channels quoted officials as saying there could be scores of dead in the rubble. The hospitals in Kathmandu have already filled up with the injured coming from different parts of the city.
In reports of first casualties from India, two deaths have been reported from Darbhanga in bihar due to a house collapse. In Barabanki, a woman and her daughter were killed when the ceiling of their house caved in.
There are reports of massive damage to infrastructure in Nepal, though fatalities have not yet been reported.
The tremors here in the National Capital Region were felt around 11:41 am, leading to panic in office buildings and residential complexes. People rushed out of high rises. Telephone networks were jammed for a long time. Officials said Delhi Metro operations were suspended for some time due to the tremors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted saying efforts are on to reach out to those affected both at home as well as in Nepal. The PM has convened a high-level meeting with Ministers and top officials at 3 PM to assess the situation.
