Elmar Gasimov to bear Azerbaijani flag on forefront of national team at Baku Olympic Stadium VIDEO

The standart-bearer of Azerbaijani national team at the European Games Baku-2015 was announced. The National Olympic Committee entrusted this mission to Elmar Gasimov the winner of the all prestigious competitions of judo in 2015.

Elmar Gasimov will bear Azerbaijani flag on the forefront of the national team of Azerbaijan at the Baku Olympic Stadium on June 12 during the opening ceremony of the I European Games.

The Olympic champions, Nazim Huseynov, Namig Abdullayev and Farid Mansurov, made a speech and recalled the honor of carrying the Azerbaijani flag in the Summer Olympic Games.

After the speeches of Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade, as well as Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Ismayil Ismayilov, the name of the standard-bearer was announced. The standard-bearer is the gold medalist of all the competitions held in 2015 in judo Elmar Gasimov.

The standard-bearer of the Azerbaijani national team will be carrying the flag at the Opening Ceremony of the First European Games to be held in the Olympic Stadium on June 12.

Elmar Gasimov, the freestyle wrestling Olympic champion Togrul Asgarov, European and world champion Haji Aliyev, the world judo champion Elkhan Mammadov and European boxing champion Olympic medalist Teymur Mammadov volunteered to be standard-bearer.

Currently ranked second in the world rankings, Azerbaijani judoka Elmar Gasimov has won three gold medals to date in 2015, including at the recent Masters in Morocco, the Grand Prix Samsun and the Grand Prix Tbilisi. The 24-year-old also claimed the silver medal at the Grand Slam Baku in May 2015, and now plans to triumph at the inaugural European Games.

Mr Gasimov finished second at the European Championships in 2014, and said that his focus during competition is key to success.

Mr Gasimov has been practising Judo for 16 years, and was excited to be competing to become the first ever European Games champion on home soil.
