The European Union (EU) is the region with the highest alcohol consumption in the world. The death rate connected with alcohol consumption in the European region for the last 25 years has grown by 4 percent, the WHO new report said. At the rate of consumption of alcoholic beverages per capita of adult population the region is still in the lead on global scale. The report for the first time monitors connection of alcohol consumption with the mortality rate in the European region.
According to the report of the UN Information Center, the statistics differs from the country to the country. For example, residents of Eastern Europe drink differently, than Europeans in the western countries.
At the same time, most of all they drink in the European Union countries. According to the report, the fifth part of the population over 14, at least, once a week reaches extreme degree of drunkenness, drinking over five glasses of alcohol. It isn't surprising that such behavior turns into cardiovascular and cancer diseases, cirrhosis, and also deliberate or accidental mutilations.
Experts urge the countries to take measures which would help to reduce the level of abuse of alcohol and to improve health of the population. Restriction of access to alcoholic beverages, increase in taxes on alcoholic products, prohibition on advertising and promotion of alcohol – all these measures already have proved the efficiency.
