Five inmates died in a fire at Bengkulu Prison that was started by rioting prisoners, police said, according to The Jakarta Globe.
The riot started when officers with the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) attempted to move in on a drug kingpin detained at the facility, Indonesian National Police Chief Badrodin Haiti said.
More than 250 inmates were evacuated when the fire broke out but five were killed in the flames, which raged for over two hours.
The National Police, together with the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the BNN earlier this week launched Operation Shining, a 30-day nationwide operation to eradicate drug abuse.
