G20 affirms support for climate change signing
Baku, April 11, AZERTAC
The G20 group of major world economies has affirmed its "full support" for the official signing of the Paris Agreement on climate change later this month, according to UN Radio.
The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the statement of support had come from China, which holds the presidency of the G20.
The climate change agreement reached by more than 190 countries last December in Paris, aims to hold global warming to below two degrees Celsius.
The signing is due to take place at UN headquarters on April 22.
"The Secretary-General is encouraged by the strong political momentum from the more than 130 countries that have confirmed their intention to sign the Agreement on 22 April right here in New York, and urges all other countries to join them in the Signing Ceremony, here at the UN," said UN spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric.
Mr Ban thanked China for its "continued strong leadership in promoting global cooperation" on climate change.
