Japan's Emperor Akihito eyeing abdication: government source, Kyodo

Baku, July 13, AZERTAC

Japan's Emperor Akihito has expressed his intention to abdicate, a government source said Wednesday, according to Kyodo News.

His 56-year-old son, Crown Prince Naruhito, is expected to succeed the 82-year-old emperor and ascend the Chrysanthemum throne.

The emperor does not have a health problem requiring him to end his reign immediately, a government source said, adding the emperor has been expressing his intention to abdicate to people around him for about a year.

In an effort to ease the burden on the aging emperor and empress, the Imperial Household Agency said in May it would reduce their official duties, such as by cutting the number of meetings with administrative agency chiefs and other guests at the Imperial Palace.
