Baku, December 23, AZERTAC

The Japan Sport Council said Tuesday it has chosen a design proposed by a consortium led by general contractor Taisei Corp. and architect Kengo Kuma for the new National Stadium to be used as the main arena for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, according to Jiji Press. Design A, one of two technical proposals for constructing the new stadium, emphasizes harmony with nature and sets the construction costs at 149 billion yen, clearing the government-set upper limit of 155 billion yen.

The JSC, the independent administrative agency that will operate the stadium in central Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward, explained its decision at a meeting of concerned cabinet ministers Tuesday morning. The decision was approved by the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. "We will make the new stadium a legacy building that can be shown proudly to future generations as the main stadium that adopts the world's best barrier-free functions, has Japanese touch and is capable of impressing people around the world," Abe said at the meeting. Toshiaki Endo, minister for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, told reporters that a quarter of the construction costs will be shouldered by the Tokyo metropolitan government.
