Baku, June 1, AZERTAC
Ben Plumpton will lead a strong Malta team at Baku 2015 Malta's Water Polo captain Ben Plumpton has been announced as the country's flagbearer at Baku 2015. Plumpton was included as part of a 59-strong team for the inaugural European Games. Malta will compete in seven sports, with the largest contingent being the 35-strong Athletics team.
Plumpton helped Malta beat Great Britain in the European Games Water Polo qualifying tournament to book the country's place in Azerbaijan.
Among the other athletes for Malta at Baku 2015 will be judoka Marcon Bezzina, who competed at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, and won bronze at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Shooting's Eleanor Bezzina, Malta's flagbearer at the 2013 Mediterranean Games, will also be in Baku.
"I have been in close contact with the organising committee in Baku for the past year or so now and from what I have learned it looks like it's going to be a high-calibre European Games," said Dion Buhagiar, Malta's Chef de Mission.
"With us having a sizeable contingent it means extra pressure (on the Malta Olympic Committee) but I’m confident that everything will go according to plan."
