Azerbaijani Minister of Justice, Chairman of the Judicial-Legal Council Fikrat Mammadov has met co-rapporteurs of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for Azerbaijan Pedro Agramunt and Tadeusz Iwinski.
According to press service of Ministry of Justice, emphasizing the fruitful cooperation with the European Council, the Minister noted successful chairmanship of Azerbaijan in Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe last year and the organization’s Action Plan for Azerbaijan adopted for upcoming 2014-2016 years. Congratulating T. Iwinski on his appointment as a new co-rapporteur, the Minister wished him success in his activity.
The Minister informed the PACE co-rapporteurs about reforms carried out in judicial-legal system under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, as well as ensuring the independence of judicial power, increasing the number of judges, expanding the competence of the Judicial-Legal Council, the application of electronic court, the work done on the modernization of infrastructure.
The development of the penitentiary system, improvement of prison conditions and other issues were also discussed at the meeting.
Recalling his visit to Azerbaijan and the meeting with national leader Heydar Aliyev, Mr. Iwinski noted that he was well informed about Azerbaijan and democratic processes carried out there.
The co-rapporteurs praised the achievements of the judicial system and expressed their gratitude for effective cooperation with the Ministry of Justice.
The sides also exchanged views on improvement of legislation, development of civil society, human rights and other issues.
Council of Europe Secretary General's Special Representative to Azerbaijan Ms. Dragana Filipovic was present at the meeting.
