Records tumble as Egypt dominate final day

Baku, May 17, AZERTAC

Shaimaa Haridy smashed the Islamic Solidarity Games records as she cruised to women's +90kg victory in the final session of the weightlifting on Wednesday, while teammate Dina Barakat made it two for Egypt.

Haridy won without breaking sweat with a record 275kg overall, before the -90kg clean and jerk record was broken twice as Barakat prevented Clementine Meukeugni Noubissi from claiming Cameroon's first ever gold medal at the Games.

Haridy was always going to win the title if she could just make a good lift in both disciplines.

The 26-year-old narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal last summer in Brazil as she finished fourth, but there was never going to be a repeat of that in Baku with only three athletes taking part.

Despite her lack of competition, Haridy was impressive as she nonchalantly dispatched of 110kg in the snatch.

Haridy, who weighs over 120kg, was not done there and eventually lifted a Games record of 120kg.

Although with an approach that is far from subtle, Haridy was one of the biggest stars competing in the Baku Weightlifting Arena this week along with compatriot Mohamed Mahmoud, who was triumphant on Tuesday.

The 2015 African Games champion confirmed her country's third weightlifting gold by lifting 145kg at the first attempt in the clean and jerk.

Haridy finished off in style too by extending the clean and jerk record out to 155kg.

It was clear from an early stage that the fight for -90kg gold would be between Egyptian Barakat and Meukeugni Noubissi.

Barakat, who turns 28 on Saturday, managed 99kg in the snatch, but her rival beat that by one kilogram.

The 26-year-old Meukeugni Noubissi broke the Games record for the clean and jerk with a lift of 123kg, despite a red light from one of the judges.

But in a gripping climax, Barakat bettered her by two kilograms at the final try to take victory by one-kilo overall on 224kg.
