Red alert in southern France as heavy rains sweep Languedoc region
The city of Montpellier has been particularly hit with dozens of roads made impossible by running water after the river Lez burst its banks.
Locals say its the heaviest rain seen for over a decade. “Every year for the grape-harvest there are storms,” said one elderly resident,” but not like this.”
So far there are no reports of casualties but the weather has wreaked havoc on the local infrastructure.
On Sunday night up to 20 cm of rain fell in the region and Meteo France has issued a red alert for the Hérault department warning of more flash flooding to come.
Schools have been closed and all forms of travel have been disrupted.
The French rail operator SNCF said three of its trains were stranded on flooded tracks and have urged people not to travel unless vital.
