Baku, May 10, AZERTAC
Matej Mugerli finished third on the closing stage of the Tour d’Azerbaidjan and third overall on the race. Alex Surutkovych took home the mountain jersey, and Maksym Averin the best Azeri rider, finishing seventh overall. The strong team performance was reflected by the Synergy Baku Cycling Project winning the ranking as the best team in the race, for the first time.
The closing stage featured eight laps of a large circuit course, followed by three laps of a difficult course through the Old City, with narrow, cobbled lanes. A break group was gone for much of the stage, and in the end, some 30 riders fought for the win. Two riders took a narrow lead which gave the win to Sergei Firsanov (RusVelo).
There were three Synergy Baku riders in that group, and Mugerli shot to the front to win the sprint of the chasing group, only one second back. Ioannis Tamouridis and Maksym Averin showed the team’s strength by finishing respectively 8th and 11th on the stage.
