Baku to host 8th Session of Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage
Baku, December 1 (AZERTAC). Baku will host the 8th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO on December 2-7.
During this session, chaired by Azerbaijani Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfas Garayev, the Committee will examine the periodic reports of the States Parties on the implementation of the Convention. It will also consider the inscriptions on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding and the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Committee will further select programs for the Register of Best Safeguarding Practices and grant financial assistance for safeguarding plans.
Celebrations activities marking the 10th anniversary of the Convention will be carried out during this session.
The event will bring together more than 600 representatives from 95 countries. Participants of the session will visit ancient historical monuments of Azerbaijan.
The core functions of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage are to promote the objectives of the Convention, provide guidance on best practices and make recommendations on measures for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage. It further examines the nominations submitted by States Parties for the inscription of intangible cultural heritage elements on the Lists of the Convention (Urgent Safeguarding List and Representative List) as well as proposals for the Register of Best Safeguarding Practices. The Committee is also in charge of granting international assistance.
