Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces awarded medal "For merits in military cooperation" of Azerbaijan
Baku, April 8 (AZERTAC). Chief of the General Staff of Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Army General Valery Gerasimov has been awarded the medal “For merits in military cooperation” of the Republic of Azerbaijan by the Order of Minister of Defence, Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov.
Prior to the awarding ceremony, Gerasimov, on a visit to Azerbaijan, met the country`s Deputy Minister of Defense, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces Colonel-General Najmaddin Sadigov.
Minister Sadigov spoke of Armenia`s military aggression against Azerbaijan, saying as a result of the aggression Azerbaijan`s territories were invaded, over one million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs. He expressed confidence that occupied territories would be liberated.
The sides discussed military cooperation between the two countries, as well as issues concerning military-educational cooperation and regional security. They also exchanged views over preparations for a meeting of the Committee of the Chiefs of General Staff of the CIS countries to be held in Baku on April 8.
Gerasimov then met Azerbaijan`s Minister of Defence, Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov.
The Azerbaijani Minister said the two countries` cooperation was based on mutual confidence and friendship.
On military-political situation in the region, the Minister of Defence said the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict poses real threat to regional stability. He stressed the importance of finding a solution to the dispute in compliance with international law.
Army General Gerasimov said relations between the two countries are based on friendship, adding Russia is an important partner for Azerbaijan.
They also exchanged views on Azerbaijan-Russia military relations, prospects for partnership and regional issues.
