IOM RESTORES SPRINGS IN NAKHCHIVAN
He also noted that it was scheduled to complete the reconstruction of the underground water-supply system, the so-called kahriz (spring).
Reportedly, 1300-meters kahriz has been entirely restored in the Anabad village of Ordubad province, dated 1886, thus, providing with the drinking water over 100 families. All expenses have been covered by the Government of Canada.
Reconstruction works have been launched in November 2001, under the sponsorship of the European Union. One of the kahriz (Lula) at the length of 1300 meters, constructed 300 years ago, has been first restored.
At the same time, according to Mr. J. Van Der Aaalst, IOM are providing trainings for the local cadres in the sphere of reconstruction of the water and irrigation systems. Five students of the local university have passed the course on the projects design and kahriz cartography, while eight people have been trained on the water-supply system reconstruction. IOM specialists have prepared video clips and booklets whereby Nakhchivan people could realize the significance of kahriz systems.
