Kurt Cobain’s famous ‘MTV Unplugged’ sweater sold for $137,500
Baku, November 10, AZERTAC
The ratty green cardigan worn by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana’s 1993 Unplugged concert just sold for $137,500 – exponentially more than what he probably bought it for at the thrift shop, according to yahoo.com.
The item was part of an Icons and Idols of Rock ‘N’ Roll auction, held on November 7th by Julien’s Auctions. The vintage Cobain sweater was appraised at between $40,000 - $60,000, and its description notes a missing button, a burn hole and discoloration. For any other auction item, this would probably lower the value but for Nirvana fans, the sweater’s flaws might have actually made it more desirable.
Nirvana’s 1993 Unplugged concert was taped only five months before Cobain died, another reason the cardigan likely sold for so much.
A second hot item auctioned off this weekend was John Lennon’s 1962 Gibson acoustic guitar which he used to write Beatles hits like “She Loves You,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” and “Love Me Do.” One very lucky - and very wealthy - Beatles fan bought it for $2.4 million.
Among the other 300+ items auctioned off were some less obvious options. A Valium pill bottle prescribed to Elvis Presley went for over $6,500, Whitney Houston’s 1988 Visa Credit Card application sold for $1,600, and Steven Tyler’s insurance card was purchased for the very affordable price of $256.
