Meeting of international experts on conflict resolution held in Baku
Baku, April 3 (AZERTAC). The Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SAM) hosted Monday a closed experts` meeting on conflict resolution and achieving peace in the modern world.
The meeting co-organized by SAM, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and the Alexanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki brought together heads of foreign policy departments of the US, Finland, members of parliament, diplomats and experts as well as representatives of the civil society.
The event featured exchange of views on military disputes, especially possible settlement methods and models on the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
Deputy Director of SAM Gulshan Pashayeva underscored the importance for restoring confidence between the sides in peaceful resolution and expressed assurance for the positive outcomes of the Baku meeting.
Director of the Alexanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki Markku Kivinen said that Finland has a great experience in peaceful resolution of territorial conflicts.
The meeting saw speeches on current resolution models of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict in the framework of Azerbaijani territorial integrity by Finnish parliamentarian Elisabeth Nauclér, chairperson of the Board of the Åland Islands Peace Institute Barbro Sundback, former representative of the European Union for the South Caucasus Heikki Talvitie, Mikko Palonkorpi from the Alexanteri Institute, official of the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy Taleh Ziyadov.
Touching on Finland`s attention to fulfillment of the peacemaking mission, the country`s Minister of Foreign Affairs Erkki Tuomioja underlined the significance of the democracy in the conflict resolution, gaining of sustainable socio-political development, providing of legal equality and strengthening of public support.
The minister praised the Baku meeting of experts stressing the importance of such events in the process of restoration of peace and security in the South Caucasus region.
