PRESIDENT ILHAM ALIYEV MEETS NATO SECRETARY GENERAL YAAP DE HOOP SCHEFFER
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and NATO Secretary General Yaap de Hoop Scheffer were taken their photos in front of the NATO flag in memory.
Then, President Ilham Aliyev and NATO Secretary General Yaap de Hoop Scheffer had a one-on-one meeting.
President of Azerbaijan noted successful development of cooperation with NATO, estimating the works done in the frame of “Individual Partnership Activity Plan” as good example. The President expressed hope for further expansion of relations between Azerbaijan and NATO.
Integration of Azerbaijan to the NATO, the European Union and other Euro-Atlantic structures is one of the priorities of our policy, he stressed. The Head of State also underlined cooperation in the energy safety field, though NATO is not directly engaged in this question. However, the Organization pays special attention to this issue, he said. President Aliyev informed on participation of Azerbaijani militaries in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Iraq to ensure stability.
The NATO Secretary General highly assessed partnership with Azerbaijan in the frame of NATO’s programs, expressing confidence for further cooperation.
In meeting, also focused were the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict and ways of its solution.
Informing on current negotiations carried out in the frame of Prague process, President Ilham Aliyev disclosed his position once again emphasizing the problem could be solved on the principles of inviolability of borders and territorial integrity of states.
Also were discussed Azerbaijan’s cooperation with the European Union, energy security, regional issues and other questions of mutual interest.

Then, President of Azerbaijan addressed the meeting at the North Atlantic Council and held discussions with permanent representatives of NATO member states in Council, the ambassadors.
