U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc. on Friday unveiled the Cybercab, its purpose-built autonomous robotaxi, in Tokyo's Aoyama district, marking the vehicle's first public showing in Japan, according to Kyodo.
The two-seat vehicle has no steering wheel, accelerator pedal, or brake pedal, enabling fully driverless operation. It features upward-opening butterfly doors, a large trunk and a large touchscreen.
Eight cameras continuously monitor the vehicle's surroundings.
Tesla has begun mass production of the Cybercab and introduced ride-hailing services in parts of the United States. There are currently no plans to sell it in Japan.
Richi Hashimoto, country manager of Tesla's Japanese unit, said the company would like to launch a self-driving taxi business in Japan "if the opportunity arises."
He indicated that Tesla plans to proceed gradually, starting with the introduction of its advanced driver-assistance system, Full Self-Driving, in existing vehicles.
The Cybercab will be displayed in Osaka from next Thursday and in Nagoya, central Japan, from Sept. 22.
