On October 26, Jeyhun Bayramov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), who is on a visit to the country.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov once again congratulated Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on his election as OIC Secretary General and wished him success in his future endeavors. During the meeting, the sides highlighted the key role of the OIC in strengthening solidarity across the Muslim world, expanding cooperation among member states, and addressing shared challenges.
The meeting addressed the current state and prospects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the OIC. FM Bayramov expressed gratitude for the Organization’s long-standing support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, emphasizing the significance of this support in promoting the norms and principles of international law.
The parties discussed the priorities set under Azerbaijan’s upcoming presidency of the OIC starting next year, preparations for the OIC Summit scheduled to take place in Baku in 2027, enhancing political and economic ties among member states, expanding cooperation in humanitarian affairs, climate change, youth, media, and other sectors, as well as joint efforts on issues concerning the Islamic world.
The meeting underscored the importance of implementing reforms aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and enhancing the effectiveness of the OIC, as well as ensuring the organization’s flexible counteraction to evolving contemporary challenges. In this context, the sides stressed the need for enhancing coordination and mutual interaction among member states.
The discussions also covered humanitarian aid initiatives carried out through the Azerbaijan International Development Agency (AIDA) and opportunities to expand humanitarian cooperation within the OIC framework.
The parties emphasized the importance of delivering humanitarian aid to populations in need and mobilizing efforts to address humanitarian challenges in Muslim countries.
Jeyhun Bayramov briefed the OIC Secretary-General on the ongoing restoration and reconstruction efforts in the region in the post-conflict period. He also drew attention to the ongoing landmine threats in the region and the key steps being taken to eliminate them.
The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on other regional issues of mutual interest.
