11 SEPTEMBER 2001 TERRORIST ACTS VICTIMS COMMEMORATED
The ceremony was attended by newly appointed US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Reno Harnish, US charge' d'affaires to Azerbaijan Nancy McEldowney, Vice Speaker of Milli Majlis Ziyafat Askarov, Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov, Chairman of Moslem Clerical office of Caucasus sheik-ul-islam Allahshukur Pashazadeh, heads of the religious communities of Europeans and mountainous Jews.
In her speech, Ms. Nancy McEldowney stressed the importance of consolidation of the countries’ efforts in combat against terrorism.
“Azerbaijan and USA side by side continue combat against terror in all its manifestations. Our peoples and states are long-term strategic partners”, Mrs. McEldowney stressed.
Then, the newly appointed Ambassador Reno Harnish read out address of the US President George Bush, whereby it is said: “United States of America will diligently continue struggle for ensuring people’s security and prevention of terrorism threat all over the world”.
In his speech, Vice Speaker of Milli Majlis Ziyafat Askarov noted that 11 September terrorist acts left trace in souls of millions all over the world. September 11 was announced by American Senate, as Patriot Day has to be marked both in the US and all over the world, Z. Askarov added.
Chairman of Moslem Clerical office of Caucasus sheik-ul-islam Allahshukur Pashazadeh, in his turn stated that terrorism has no religion. Islam is not linked with terrorism and instills in the people inadmissibility of violence. We support any efforts aimed at prevention of the terrorist acts, Pashazade noted.
In conclusion, ceremony participants revered September 11 victims’ memory.
