4,9 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE HIT NORTHEAST OF IRAN

Richter magnitude 4,9 quake hit northeast of Iran bordering Turkmenistan on October 5, 2003. The shocks were registered at 10:03 a.m. According to Center of Geophysics of Khorasan province, the epicenter was 300 km north of Meshhed. No casualties and damages reported.

The greater part of Iranian territory is located within the active seismic zone. About 950 small and medium earthquakes have been registered here for the last 13 years. The earthquakes took a toll of 17 thousand 600 people and over 53 thousand were wounded.
