ABDULLAH GUL: ‘INTERNATIONAL PEACEMAKERS WILL PROTECT ONLY PEACE, NOT INTERFERING THUS IN PROCESSES OCCURRING IN LEBANON’
Head of the foreign policy department of Turkey stated that that during his one-day visit to Beirut he met with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, chairman of parliament and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Discussed was the situation in this country and deployment in the south of Lebanon of the international peace-making forces. As he said, main reason of delay of acceptance of the resolution of UN Security Council had been the requirement of official Beirut that peace-making armies did not come into contact to the population of Lebanon and only maintained peace, not interfering, thus, in processes occurring in Lebanon’.
Abdullah Gul has told, that mission of peacemakers is not connected absolutely with disarmament of Hezbollah. The international peacemakers will assist the Lebanese government.
And as to participation of Turkey in the international peacemakers, the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared, that this question is not specified yet, and the Turkish military divisions to be probably sent to Lebanon, will only perform peace-making mission.
