ADA University hosts science talks on “Where will nuclear and high energy physics will go in the 21st century”

A round table entitled “Where will nuclear and high energy physics will go in the 21st century” has been held at ADA University.

The event was organized as part of an international workshop on "Prospects for cooperation between the United Nuclear Research Institute (BNTI) and Azerbaijan the field of nuclear physics, elementary particle physics and particle detectors".

The round table was moderated by Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor at the University of Maryland Roald Sagdeev. It featured presentations by Director of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions Sergey Dmitriev, joint Scientific Managing Director of the International Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe GmbH (FAIR GmbH) Paolo Giubellino and Director of Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics Czech Technical University in Prague Ivan Stekl.

During his presentation called “Superheavy Elements of the Periodic Table of D.I. Mendeleev-Present and Future”, Sergey Dmitriev emphasized the role and importance of the Periodic Table of D.I. Mendeleev in terms of studying the nuclear reactions and superheavy elements.

He highlighted the latest projects and experimental setups such as Dubna gas-filled separator of recoil nuclei (DGFRS), which was commissioned at U400 cyclotron in 1989. This separator of complete fusion reaction products is designed for study of heavy and superheavy nuclei stability, synthesis of new nuclides, study of nuclear structure and properties as well as their formation mechanism in nuclear reactions.

Dmitriev also gave detailed information about the experimental hall of the SHE-Factory: New facility for super heavy element research and launch of its basic facility – the DC-280 cyclotron which were inaugurated on 25 March 2019. The factory of superheavy elements is created on the basis of the DC-280 heavy ion accelerator, the world-leader among accelerators of this type.

Paolo Giubellino made a presentation on “The Universe in the Lab – GSA/FAIR”. He said it is a reference laboratory for nuclear physics in Europe, one of the top heavy-ion accelerator facilities in the world. He highlighted the activity of the FAIR GSI. The center engaged in Major GSI discoveries, new chemical elements, hundreds of new isotopes, new decay modes. He mentioned that one of major GSI discoveries also include the innovation in cancer therapy.

Giubellino said that the FAIR experiments offer unique opportunities for studying and solving the fundamental questions such as Neutron Star Mergers. The FAIR search pillars include equation of State (Hades, CBM), gravitational wave signal, amount of ejecta, Baryon-Baryon interaction (PANDA), exotic neutron-rich nuclei (NUSTAR), r-process nucleosynthesis and abundancies of the heaviest elements gold, platinum and beyond, Plasma and atomic opacities (APPA), Kilonova electromagnetic transient and other issues.

Ivan Stekl delivered a presentation on “Nuclear and particle physics in the 21st century”. He highlighted the main focus of particle physics in the 21st century which was to explore the high energy frontier of particle physics using colliders. He also mentioned the existing ideas for further research in this field. He said that in the 21st century it becomes more important to explore low energy and low intensity frontiers of particle physics. Stekl also highlighted the important experiments carried on the low energy and low intensity frontiers.

At the end of the meeting, academician Roald Sagdeev said a cooperation protocol signed between Baku State University and the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics Czech Technical University in Prague will give impetus to Azerbaijan's joining international cooperation in this field.
