AZERBAIJANI SPORTSMEN GAINED RECORD NUMBER OF MEDALS FOR 2003

In 2003, Azerbaijani sportsmen gained record number of medals at the European and world championships, among of which, 64 gold, 54 silver, 70 bronze, 74 medals gained at Olympic kinds of sports, press-service of Ministry of Youth, Sports and Tourism reports. There are 13 licenses in 7 kinds of sports – 2 ones in free wrestling, 2-Greco-Roman, 5- heavy athletics, one- skeet shooting, shooting from pneumatic pistol, taekwando and calisthenics.

Arif Abdullayev, world free wrestling champion was named the best sportsman of year. World Boxing champion Agasi Mammadov, Turan Mirzoyev- bronze winner of world heavy athletics championship, Rashad Ahmadov - bronze winner of taekwando championship, Dinara Gimatova- bronze winner of world calisthenics cup, Namig Abdullayev – European free wrestling championship, Zemfira Meftaheddinova- European champion on skeet shooting, Rovshan Bayramov- world champion among youth on Greco-Roman wrestling, international grand master Teymur Rajabov and Hakim Nazaraliyev – world champions on sambo.

Chief coach of Azerbaijan team on free wrestling Yagub Mammadov became the best coach, professor Agajan Abiyev- the best referee. “Arena” telecasting of Leader TV company became the best sports telecasting, Anar Miriyev form Yeni Azerbaijan newspaper- the best sports journalist.
