Baku, June 4, AZERTAC
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has met with EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia Toivo Klaar.
EU Special Representative Toivo Klaar hailed his meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and the fruitful discussions they held at the meeting.
FM Mammadyarov informed the EU Special Representative about the current negotiations process on the resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, including the meeting of foreign ministers in Moscow. Minister Elmar Mammadyarov further highlighted the fact that during the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs last visit to the region an Azerbaijani serviceman was killed by a sniper shot opened by the Armenian armed forces, and noted that these bloody acts undermine the negotiation process. Noting that the next meeting at the level of the ministers of foreign affairs has already been agreed, the Minister stressed that the realities on the ground are still the same. “The armed forces of Armenia must withdraw from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and there is no alternative for the future development of the region.”
Toivo Klaar noted the importance of the substantial negotiations and expressed the European Union’s readiness to contribute to the preparation of the populations for peace.
The sides also discussed the regional issues of mutual interest.
