Azerbaijani Ombudsperson informs UNHCR representative about Armenia’s policy of ethnic cleansing

Azerbaijani Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Sabina Aliyeva has met with newly appointed Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Azerbaijan Bik Lum.
The Azerbaijani Ombudsperson congratulated Bik Lum on her appointment, wished her success in her activity in Azerbaijan. Sabina Aliyeva informed the UNHCR representative about the activities carried out as a part of the cooperation between the Ombudsman Institution and UNHCR.
Sabina Aliyeva highlighted the Ombudsperson’s activities in the field of protection of the rights of women, children, internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons and emphasized that it is necessary to continue the joint educational, legal aid, and monitoring activities in this regard.
During the meeting, Sabina Aliyeva also touched upon the measures undertaken to ensure the safe return of Azerbaijani refugees and former IDPs, whose fundamental rights and freedoms have been violated due to Armenia’s ethnic cleansing and occupation policies, underlining the importance of support by the international organizations in this regard.
UNHCR Representative Bik Lum expressed her interest in strengthening the existing cooperation with the Ombudsman Institution.
They also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.
