As is known 2002 was declared by the United Nations Organization as the International year of ecotourism and the International year of mountains. In this connection the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and the UNEP conducted in Quebec (Canada) the International summit on ecotourism on May 19-22, 2002. The Declaration adopted at the summit contains the recommendations on the development of ecological tourism in different countries. It indicates that the concept «ecotourism» can only be applied to those types of tourism that are aimed at the political and financial support of the environmental protection, recognition and respect of the rights of the local and indigenous population, as well as cultural and nature protection education of tourists. The declaration of 2002 as the International year of ecotourism served as a stimulus for the intensification of joint efforts of governments, international and regional organizations, as well as nongovernmental organizations to promote sustainable development and environmental protection.
