Azerbaijani grandmaster tops Nakhchivan Open 2016

Azerbaijani grandmaster Eltaj Safarli is an absolute leader at the Nakhchivan Open 2016 chess festival marking the 93rd anniversary of national leader Heydar Aliyev.

Safarli tops the A tournament with 6.5 points after 8 rounds. Shahriyar Mammadyarov Ukrainian GM Yuriy Kuzubov are runner ups with 6 points.

Eltaj Safarli will next face Dutch Sergey Tivyakov.

The tournament promises $7,500 money prize for the winners.

The 9-round chess festival brings together more than 300 players from Azerbaijan, Belgium, Georgia, Germany, Iran, Mongolia, Netherlands, Turkey, Ukraine, and Russia.
