A scientific-theoretical conference on the subject “Topical Problem of the East: History and Modernity”, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the hero of the Soviet Union, outstanding scientist-orientalist and public figure, academician Ziya Bunyatov was held at the building of Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan /NAS/. The arrangement was organized by the NAS Institute of Oriental Studies after Z.Bunyatov.

In his opening speech, President of the National Academy of Science, academician Mahmud Karimov told on many-sided scientific and public activity of Ziya Bunyatov.

The conference participants have also heard the reports “Life and Creative Activity of Ziya Bunyatov” by Rector of the Institute of Oriental Sciences, deputy Chairman of the Milli Majlis Govhar Bakhshaliyeva, “Academician Ziya Bunyatov, as an Outstanding Orientalist” by corresponding member of NAS Vasim Mammadaliyev, and “Academician Ziya Bunyatov and Questions of Historical Geography of Azerbaijan” by Doctor of History Vagif Piriwere.

The reporters and other speakers dwelt on rich and purposeful way of the late academician, his great merits in development of oriental studies, personal qualities, and noted that as a talented scientist he managed to gain high authority far beyond the country.
