EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PRESIDENT ISSUES STATEMENT ON OUTCOME OF MOLDOVAN ELECTIONS
Baku, July 31 (AZERTAC). President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek issued a statement on outcome of parliamentary elections in Moldova.
The statement reads: “I would like to congratulate the people of Moldova for their numerous participation in the parliamentary elections which took place yesterday. As I have learned from the preliminary findings of the International Election Observation Mission (IEOM), in which the European Parliament participated with a 7 member delegation, the election has been well administered and conducted in a calm manner. The way it was carried out was generally assessed as positive. Many of the international standards and requirements have been met. That is a positive sign, however it reiterates the need to continue the democratic process which is still far from complete and in particular to restore trust between the major political forces. At this juncture politicians of all parties represented in the parliament will have to work together and take full responsibility for the post electoral process in order to make it run smoothly.
Moldova is a member of the new European Union initiative, the Eastern Partnership. This is a tool which encourages deeper and closer cooperation of our Eastern neighbours with the EU. It should be seen as a great opportunity. Political stability, well functioning democracy and adherence to basic European principles in regard to human rights and fundamental freedoms are crucial for this cooperation to bear fruit for all sides involved. Putting this into practice should be the ambition of the political leaders in Chisinau. The European Union will continue to assist Moldova in these crucial undertakings.”
