Eternal Flame memorial complex
Baku, January 5, AZERTAC
The idea of creating the Eternal Flame memorial complex in memory of the martyrs of the January 20 tragedy was first put forward in 1994.
On the initiative of national leader Heydar Aliyev, Milli Majlis decided to create a monument to perpetuate the memory of martyrs.
The prepared projects did not satisfy President Heydar Aliyev, because they only reflected the tragedy, and he instructed to prepare several more projects. The monument to be erected should reflect the tragedy and heroism of the people.
Heydar Aliyev gave instructions and recommendations to the established commission: instructed architects and sculptors to create a monument that will be more valuable than a large-scale work in terms of its impact, content and level. A year later, on the fifth anniversary of the tragedy, he was presented two projects at the exhibition.
The project developed by the Design Company headed by Honored Architect Elbay Gasimzade is selected in the competition. On August 5, 1998, Heydar Aliyev ordered the erection of the Eternal Flame memorial complex in the Alley of Martyrs in Baku.
The complex was inaugurated on October 9, 1998. The monument consists of a golden glass dome standing on an octagonal star and a crowned tomb.
The golden cupola shining in the night sky embodies the spirit of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence of Azerbaijan.
During the reconstruction of the Alley of Martyrs by the Order of President Ilham Aliyev in 2007, the columns of the Eternal Flame monument were raised, and the octagonal stars and pores in the monument were decorated with gold.
