The European Parliament has today elected Italian social democrat David Sassoli as its new president, LETA reports.
Sassoli, a 63-year-old former journalist, won the absolute majority of ballots he needed at the second round of voting, seeing off German Green Ska Keller, far-left Spaniard Sira Rego and Czech conservative Jan Zahradil.
Of the 667 ballot slips found valid after the second voting round, 345 had been cast for Sassoli.
“We have got to be leading the necessary, indeed the vital, change to make Europe stronger and to modernize it,” Sassoli said before the vote.
He named climate change, migration and social justice as the main challenges facing Europe.
The EU leaders on Tuesday nominated German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen as commission chief and IMF chief Christine Lagarde to head the European Central Bank, though their appointments still need confirmation.
