GERMANY OFFERS TO FOUND ‘EUROPEAN UNION FUND’ ON IRAQ
At the session of Foreign Ministers of European Union member-states in Brussels, the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Y. Fischer put forward an offer to found European Union Fund, which will carry out peacemaking activities on reconstruction of Iraq independently on the US. Establishment of this Fund is one of the urgent tasks of the EU, he believes. Touching upon the issue whether the US support foundation of such Fund, Mr. Fischer said, if all EU member-states express their will, this problem can be easily solved.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria, Benita Maria Ferrero-Waldner supported the idea and expressed confidence that a major part of member-states will take part in the work of this Fund.
According to the EU Commissioner for foreign policy, Chris Patten, who supported Fischer’s offer as well, this Fund should perform its activities under the patronage of the World Bank and the UN Organization.
