MEMO SIGNED BETWEEN MILLI MAJLIS OF AZERBAIJAN REPUBLIC AND THE U.S. CONGRESS OPENS NEW PAGE IN HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT OF BILATERAL RELATIONS.

Deputy Chairman of the Milli Mjlis, Chairman of the MM’s Standing Commission for Security and Defense Affairs Ziyafet Asgarov has held a briefing on the memorandum signed August 29 between the Azerbaijan legislative body and the United States Congress.

Ziyafet Asgarov said the memo on forming a working group of the Milli Mjlis and the U.S. Congress is the first official document approved by the two countries’ legislative bodies. ‘As this initiative of the Congress meets national interests of the Azerbaijan Republic, it has been approved, and we have given consent with satisfaction,’ he said.

According to the memorandum, both parties - the Milli Majlis and the Congress - have come to decision on forming six groups in the framework of the joint working groups for preservation of regional stability and security and taking into consideration that the Caspian region, especially its Azerbaijani sector, are an important source of stable alternative world’s energy supply, the role Azerbaijan has been playing as the U.S. strategic partner, it participation in the anti-terror coalition, Azerbaijan government’s decision to detach peacemaking forces to Iraq, Kosovo and Afganistan, as well as the fact that the country has achieved important progress in area of economic and democratic development. The mentioned groups are expected to deal with security and military building, power engineering and environment, finance and banking, education, science and technology, agriculture and human rights.

Ziyafet Asgarov noted the document permit Azerbaijan Parliamentary delegation to address the Congress with detailed statements related both Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and many other problems. Since the next year, according to him, members of the working group will pay reciprocal visits to be financed by specially founded fund.
