OMBUDSMAN MAKES STATEMENT ON GENOCIDE OF AZERBAIJANIS
Opening the event, Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova told that as a result of the purposeful policy of genocide and deportation pursued by Armenian nationalists against Azerbaijani people in ХIX–XX centuries, historical lands of Azerbaijan had been seized, tens thousands Azerbaijanis killed, hundreds of thousands ousted from their native lands, and valuable monuments of national culture destroyed. She mentioned as well that March 1918 carnage was written in history of Azerbaijan in blood: for three days, dashnaks and Bolsheviks had been massacring 12 thousand Azerbaijanis in Baku and other regions of the country nor sparing even old people, women and children.
The Ombudsman stated the discreditable actions by the Armenian nationalists against Azerbaijan people had been committed purposefully for many long years with the intention to annihilate a concrete nation on ethnic basis that according to the international law is called genocide. Legal basis of genocide was reflected in the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crime of Genocide adopted by the UN General Assembly’s December 9 1948 Resolution 260 (III).
Mrs. Suleymanova emphasized that Armenia’s policy of terrorism has been carried out for many years before very eyes of the international community, contradicting international legal norms, principles of the United Nations and OSCE. Armenian continues to ignore UN SC four resolutions on unconditional withdrawal of its military forces from the occupied lands of Azerbaijan. She stated on the necessity to put forward the issue of genocide of Azerbaijanis for discussion at the UN Security Council, give legal assessment to these crimes and establish an international tribunal like it had taken place in Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
In conclusion, the meeting participants heard the text of the statement, whose English version was sent to the UN General Secretary, the UN High Commissioners on Human rights and Refugees, Council of Europe, OSCE and special representative of the European Union for Southern Caucasus.
