REGULAR SESSION OF FRONTIER SERVICE HEADS STARTED

A regular session of the working group consisting of Heads of frontier services began its work in the “Crescent Beach” Hotel in Baku, September 16.

The issues related to combat of organized trans-boundary crime, improvement of work of International Shiofok Conference on frontier issues, further activity of the working groups of the conference were discussed during the session, with the participation of Heads of the frontier services of Azerbaijan, Germany, Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Turkey.

Opening the session, Head of the State Frontier Service of Azerbaijan, Commander of Frontier troops, Lieutenant General Elchin Guliyev greeted the participants and said that during the last two years international relations of the Frontier service of Azerbaijan have developed greatly. Since 2001, we have been actively participating in the sessions of International Conference on frontier issues held in a Hungarian town Shiofok and known as “Shiofok Conference”.

At present four working groups are functioning in the frameworks of the conference, consisting of the representatives of more than 50 countries and 10 international organizations. At the session held this year State frontier service of Azerbaijan was assigned to lead the working group on combat of illegal trafficking of weapons, ammunition and radioactive substances. It was agreed to hold a regular sessions of the working group consisting of the heads of frontier services in Baku on September 16-17.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Vilayat Guliyev speaking at the session, wished success in work of the conference, dwelled on Azerbaijan’s participation in international projects, economic reforms implemented in the country, role of frontier services in provision security in Azerbaijan and region and combat against international terrorism. He told in details on Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno Karabakh and its consequences, noted that Nagorno Karabakh occupied by the armed forces of Armenia has been uncontrolled territory for 15 years, and it is used as a transit for the trafficking of drugs and other illegal goods, and stressed the importance of taking measures in connection with this fact.

Representatives of various states, participating in the conference expressed their views on the topics discussed, touched upon the issues of organized crime combat, illegal migration, spread of weapons of mass destruction, illegal trafficking of drugs, weapons and ammunition, smuggling, reinforcement of guarding sea frontiers, prospective of development of bilateral relations, as well cooperation in the field of logistical support.

On the same day, the participants of the conference visited Martyrs Alley, honored the memory of fallen, who perished for freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

The guest laid flowers on heroes graves, who gave their lives in the name of Motherland, laid a wreath to the “Eternal fire” memorial.

Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan Vahid Aliyev attended the ceremonies.
