Responding to the questions from journalists on main goals of his official visit to Azerbaijan, Boris Gryzlov said:
Relationship between Russia and Azerbaijan is now very close and amicable. The visit is being paid in the light of this relationship on the eve of the interparliamentary group’s Moscow meeting and Economic forum to be held in Baku. The scope of issues we are going to discuss on a broader scale than merely interparliamentary links includes those outspoken by our presidents in Moscow, and that of doubling commodity turnover between the two countries to bring it up to 1 billion US dollars. It is clear that economy should develop on the base of legislation. The latter should be improved to the extent that it could promote development of economy in our two countries. Of course, we will talk of development of cooperation in various fields.
This year is an Olympic one, and related issue will be touched as well during our meeting with President of Azerbaijan, President of the National Olympic Committee Ilham Aliyev. Especially since vice-President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Duma Deputy Kozlovsky is also among members of our delegation; so, we have wide range of issues to discuss, and we would like to do so during 24 hours of our staying in Azerbaijan.
Today, about two million Azerbaijanis live in Russia; they are Russian citizens and protected by laws of the Russian Federation.
