A solemn ceremony marking centenary of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was held in Madrid, Spain.
Addressing the event, Azerbaijan`s Ambassador to Spain Anar Maharramov said the first parliamentary Republic in Muslim East was established on May 28, 1918 in Azerbaijan. He highlighted women`s active role in the socio-political development of Azerbaijan. The diplomat underlined that the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic as the first parliamentary republic in the East, introduced universal suffrage years before a number of the Western countries. Mr. Maharramov noted more than one million Azerbaijanis became refugee and IDPs as the result of the ethnic cleansing policy perpetrated by Armenia. The diplomat noted Azerbaijan`s gained its independence thanks to wise policy of national leader Heydar Aliyev. "This policy is successfully being continued by President Ilham Aliyev."
He touched upon the large-scale economic, energy, transport projects carried out under the initiative of Azerbaijan.
On Spanish-Azerbaijani relations, the Ambassador highlighted succesfully developing bonds between the two countries. "Spain and Azerbaijan support each other within the international organizations. Spain recognizes Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity and supports Azerbaijan`s just position over the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabkah conflict. "
He noted Azerbaijan and Spain marked the 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations in 2017.
Director General of económic and internacionales relations of the Minsitry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Cristina Serrano Leal highlighted steadily developing relations between the two countries. Cristina Serrano Leal congratulated the attendees on the occasion of the centenary of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
The reception was attended by officials, ambassadors of foreign countries accredited in Spain, representatives of international organizations and representatives of public.
The event also featured a concert.
