SEMIINAR ON WOMAN’S PROBLEMS HELD IN PARLIAMENT
The seminar entitled “International Law: Women’s Rights, From Equal Rights to Equal Results” organized by the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and UNIFEM was held at the parliament on 1 November. The goal of the event, according the president of the public association “Leader”, deputy Malahat Hasanova is to exchange views on the role of women in the country’s political, economic and cultural life, as well as on the work done and future plans in this sphere. She also told of UN’s women rights related resolutions, gender equality, consolidation of women around the world, and the role of women in conflict prevention and peacebuilding. Speakers noted that attention to the women’s problems in Azerbaijan especially increased after national leader Heydar Aliyev’s return to power in the country, and that his relevant decree highly valued by the United nations gave a powerful impetus to resolution of these problems. They also touched upon the problems the women of Azerbaijan faced as a result of the Armenia-Azerbaijan problem over Nagorno-Karabakh, and their role in its settlement.
