Azerbaijani grandmaster Shahriyar Mammadyarov will contest medals at the 80th Tata Steel Chess Tournament to be held in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands from January 12 to 28.
The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is one of the most prestigious events in the international chess calendar. The "Wimbledon of Chess" attracts the very best chess grandmasters in the world, along with thousands of amateur players, live event visitors and online visitors from around the world. In 2018, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament celebrates its 80th anniversary.
The tournament has two main player groups, each with 14 players. They are known as the Tata Steel Masters and the Tata Steel Challengers. Both the Masters and the Challengers play their first round on Saturday 13 January 2018. In addition to Grandmaster events, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament also organises amateur events that are open to players of all levels.
