TALKS ON CASPIAN STATUS POSITIVELY ASSESSED
Definition of legal status of the Caspian and bringing its current legal status in compliance with the modern requirements is one of the important questions, to be solved by the littoral states. Responding to question of the AzerTAj correspondent on conclusions of the negotiations in this field, foreign minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Vilayat Guliyev said: ‘Negotiations conducted among the Caspian coastal countries last years allows to reach essential results. In this context, it can be noted the rapprochement and even coincidence of positions on a number of parameters of legal status of the Caspian. As known, among Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia was signed an agreement on division of seabed of the Caspian. On the base of these agreements, the seabed was divided in accordance with the mid-line principle.
In the course of official visit of the President of Azerbaijan to Iran in May 2002, was laid foundation of the bilateral Azerbaijani-Iranian talks on the problem of status of the Caspian. After this visit, was reached certain consent in the said field, arouse hope for quick elimination of the existing disputes.
