Baku, February 7 (AZERTAC). The European Union supports realization of the Nabucco gas pipeline project, and considers funding it, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso told journalists, following the talks, he held with members of the Russian government.

According to Barroso, the EU seeks to diversify its gas supply sources.

He noted the European Union so far does not plan to give financial support to Nord Stream and South Stream projects, because, he added, they are commercial, and their organizers have not asked the EU for financial support.

“The European Union has been asked for possible funds in order to accelerate the construction of Nabucco and the request is under consideration” Barroso underlined.

Barroso noted the European Union does not oppose Nabucco to Nord and South Stream pipelines, adding Russia remains an important supplier of gas to Europe.
