Baku, September 18 (AZERTAC). Another extra 1.6 billion U.S. dollars is required to fund a new humanitarian appeal that was launched here on Friday to help Pakistan, which was hit by the most devastating floods in a century in July.

"Every dollar is required to save lives," UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at the launch of the Revised Emergency Response Plan, calling the Pakistan floods "the worst natural disaster the UN has responded to in its 65 year history."

Adding the first 459 million U.S. dollars of the first flash appeal which was launched on Aug. 20, the total of the UN Emergency Response Plan comes to 2 billion U.S. dollars, the largest yet UN disaster appeal.

"Eighty percent of the first appeal is funded as of today," Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos told reporters here.

India, during a plenary meeting on Friday, pledged 20 million U. S. dollars of relief aid for the UN`s Pakistan Floods Emergency Response Plan, and an additional 5 million U.S. dollars to the World Food Program. Other member states have stated that they intend to increase their contributions, Amos said.

"Pakistan is not facing one humanitarian crisis, but many at once, different responses are required," Ban said in his speech.

"Helping the 20 million people affected will be a test for our collective humanity," he said, noting that "the human tragedy is immense and still growing."

"Millions of people are waiting for help," the UN chief noted, calling in particular for help for the millions of children and pregnant women who are at risk and lack access to basic health care.
