U.S. EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR 2003-2004 ANNOUNCED
Having stressed the role of the educational programs in development of the relations between the two countries, the U.S. charge' d'affaires in Azerbaijan Nancy McEldowney said fourty million dollars had been allocated for development of educaton in Azerbaijan. According to her over two thousand citizens of the country has studied in the USA since 1993.
She emphasized that a firm foundation had been laid for a long-term strategic co-operation between the two countries, and that the exchange programs in the area of education had allowed thousands of Azerbaijani citizens to raise their qualification in the American Universities for the last decade. Mrs. McEldowney said the American Government would continue to support education programs in Azerbaijan down the road.
Addressing the press conference, deputy Minister of Education Elmar Gasymov said the rapid upsurge of education had been observed in the country for the last ten years that inseparably linked with the name of President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev. According to him, the U.S. Department of State assigns 6-7 million annually to support educational programs in Azerbaijan. Mr. Gasymov especially stressed the importance of the “Harmony Project”, which had promoted opening in 25 schools internet-centers worth 18-25 thousand dollars each. “We are pleased that in the framework of the “Harmony Project” 25 more regional school will be computerized in 2003/2004 academic year”, the deputy Minister said.
